In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin…

And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.

…an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

Favour is such a welcome word. In our imaginations it conjures up all kinds of blessing Fed Ex’d by the Father directly to us. An international travelling ministry, prosperity, universal popularity?

Mary was strangely intuitive when she was troubled by Gabriel’s words. Yes the family would have international travel to Egypt, as refugees from a violent and jealous puppet king. Yes the family had gold… they were going to need it to survive in a foreign land. No they were not popular… to the point that a death warrant was issued on her precious baby.

Somehow Mary knew this favour from God also spelled TROUBLE!

Advent is the story of what Happens when God’s favour is bestowed upon you.

You get to partner in birthing world transforming initiatives…

And sometimes you get into a LOT of trouble…

We can be Thankful in Advent because the advent story shows us that one is worth the cost of the other.

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (ESV)

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (ESV)
