…an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

Peace on earth has to be one of the most evasive concepts to the untrained eye. In one sense you can’t blame people for wanting to take God to the cleaners by invoking The Advertising Standards Agency. There is hardly a festive season that passes by without some act of terrorism, major disaster or freak of nature wiping out countless human lives. I have to say I almost dread watching the news every Christmas Day knowing that somewhere, someone’s Christmas has been detonated… but then so was the first Christmas with the ‘slaughter of the innocents’…

What are we to do with the utopian dream? Well firstly understand that the Hebrew concept of peace is not necessarily the absence of conflict. Rather, it is that in the midst of conflict and trauma there is wellbeing in the heart of the believer!

A friend of mine spoke at World Peace Day about 10 years ago and shared this simple truth. ‘You want peace on earth? It starts with peace in here (tapping his chest where his heart was)!’

‘Peace on Earth’ is not some unobtainable utopian dream… it is a decree from Heaven’s Throne Room heralded by arc-angels. But, the reason it evades so many people is that it must first be encountered and make its habitation in our hearts.

As we hurtle towards the prezzies, turkey and festive chaos… my plea and invitation to you all is this. Make room for HIM in your heart this Christmas! The encounter and habitation of His peace starts right there.

We can be Thankful In Advent because ‘Peace on Earth’ starts with ‘Peace in me’.
